CAN CRUSH SIMULATION FEA
As part of a group project for a Finite Element Analysis module, we were tasked with simulating a can being crushed using the software Abaqus. The purpose of this simulation was to test different materials and dimensions to improve the cans structural rigidity.
The can was modelled as a 3D cylindrical shell element extrusion. Two plates were also modeled at the top and bottom, one of which was fixed and the other was free to move in the axis of deformation

The can was also tested for its piercing strength, with a quadratic mesh that was refined at the point of interaction.
