AUTOMATED ASSEMBLY OF TIMBER FURNITURE

A year long group project with one of the largest sofa manufacturing companies in the UK. The project's aim was to investigate the current manual manufacturing process of the sofa components and provide a re-designed solution for fully automated assembly.

My involvement in the project was to:
- Investigate and re-design the current sofa components to increase modular design, reduce components, simplify assembly and provide a solution that could be assembled by robots using engineering techniques such as Boothroyd DFA.
- Research and Identify different manufacturing and assembly techniques from other companies which could be used for the sofa company.
- Analyse the current assembly process through multiple visits to the companies production line and identify improvements to the assembly in order to reduce the overall time and cost.
- Design a vision system in LabVIEW that could identify each of the unique sofa parts through a camera and communicate position, rotation and potential errors to a robotic arm and operator through a user interface.
